BISMARCK, ND – The city of Bismarck is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Madison “Madi” Stumbo, a beloved Assistant Store Leader at Scheels and cherished member of the community, who tragically passed away following a devastating accident.
Madi was known for her radiant smile, boundless energy, and the unmistakable warmth she brought to every space she entered. Her passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of her family, friends, coworkers, and all those fortunate enough to have crossed her path.
Originally from the small town of Hitterdal, Minnesota, Madi grew up surrounded by the values of kindness, humility, and hard work. She graduated from Ulen-Hitterdal High School, where she stood out for her school spirit, compassion for others, and infectious positivity. Those early traits only grew stronger as she stepped into adulthood.
After relocating to Bismarck, Madi quickly made a lasting impression through her professional journey with Scheels. As an Assistant Store Leader, she earned the respect and admiration of her peers and customers alike. Colleagues describe her as a natural leader—dedicated, enthusiastic, and always willing to lift others up. Her leadership went beyond her title; she brought people together, created community, and led with empathy.
“She was the kind of person who made you feel seen and appreciated every single day,” said a fellow team member at Scheels. “She didn’t just lead our store—she led with her heart.”
Outside of work, Madi lived a life filled with love and adventure. She was engaged to her fiancé, Jason Kemmis, with whom she was building a future grounded in mutual love and shared dreams. The couple shared a deep connection, often talking about their plans for the future and the life they envisioned together. Whether it was road trips, weekend getaways, or simply enjoying the quiet moments, Madi approached every experience with joy and gratitude.
She had a deep appreciation for the outdoors, often spending time hiking, camping, or sitting around a bonfire with friends and family. Madi also loved the simple things in life—early morning coffee, heartfelt conversations, and spontaneous laughter that filled a room.
What set Madi apart was her ability to make others feel special. She never forgot a birthday, always celebrated the wins of others, and was often the first to lend a listening ear. Her thoughtfulness extended beyond her circle, impacting coworkers, customers, and strangers with small but meaningful gestures that brightened lives.
News of her passing has sent ripples of sorrow throughout Bismarck and beyond. Tributes have flooded social media, with heartfelt messages, photos, and stories that illustrate just how much Madi meant to so many.
In honor of her life, a funeral service will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, July 11, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 106 Osage Avenue, Bismarck. Visitation will take place the evening prior, Thursday, July 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, followed by a prayer service at 7:00 PM.
Though her time was tragically brief, Madison “Madi” Stumbo leaves behind a legacy defined by compassion, leadership, and an unwavering zest for life. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her light will continue to shine in the memories and love she shared.
Her community, her team, and most importantly, her family and friends will carry her spirit forward—remembering her not for the way she left, but for the beautiful way she lived.
